
On May 4, 2023, employees of the Land Management Institute of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences participated in the online event “Legislation and strategies of the European Union in the field of soil protection”, organized by the German-Ukrainian Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD), which is implemented with the support of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany (BMEL).
The head of the Expert Dialogue on Land Issues at the APD (BVVG) Katja Dells and deputy director of the Department of Agrarian Development – head of the Department of Agriculture and Crop Production of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Andriy Kravchenko addressed the participants with a welcome speech. Katja Dells also moderated the event.
The head of the Office for Soil Protection and Ecological Agrarian Structure, Dr. Andrea Beste, presented the results of research of the legislation and strategies of the European Union in the field of soil protection, which is especially relevant for Ukraine as a candidate for EU membership.
During the panel discussion director of the Land Management Institute of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, correspondent member of NAAS, Doctor of Economics, Prof. Yosyp Dorosh presented the Institute’s current and future directions of work in terms of supporting the Government of Ukraine in the implementation of European requirements for soil protection. He emphasized the important role of scientific research in the implementation and adaptation of the principles and measures of European strategies, plans and concepts on soil protection to ensure food security, clear and transparent definition of the rights and responsibilities of every citizen and agrarian business, including small ones, on national and local level regarding lands and soils.
The general director of the Institute of Soil Protection of Ukraine, Prof. Yuriy Zaitsev and Acting Head of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Management of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Ecology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University Andriy Achasov also took part in the panel discussion.
The participants of the online event exchanged opinions on the prospects and problems of implementing measures in the field of soil protection in the EU and Ukraine, the need for joint work on the classification of soils was noted, which will make it possible to develop more effective solutions for their protection.
